Jelen dolgozat összefoglalást nyújt a kézhigiéné történetének főbb fordulópontjairól a 18. századtól napjainkig.
Abstract:
The history of hand hygiene. The first documented observation regarding hand hygiene was made more than 200 years ago. Alexander Gordon recognized the contagiousness of the puerperal fever and the role of healthcare workers’ hands in cross-transmission leading to an outbreak between 1789 and 1792 in Aberdeen, Scotland. Over the centuries, several pioneers suggested the hand hygiene as a preventive measure. However, Ignaz Phillip Semmelweis, Hungarian obstetrician demonstrated experimentally that appropriate hand hygiene could prevent puerperal infections and maternal deaths. Nevertheless, the theoretical explanation of hand hygiene was established only 20 years later, after the discoveries of Pasteur, Koch, and Lister. In the 21th century, Didier Pittet highlights the importance and need of multimodal effective improvement strategies in the enhancement of healthcare workers’ hand hygiene compliance. This publication summarizes the historical landmarks of hand hygiene in healthcare from Alexander Gordon in the 18th century to the contemporary work of Didier Pittet.
